Dryer vent fires are such a common problem that FEMA and The Na-tional Fire Protection Association (NFPA) print bulletins each year to educate home owners about the dangers of not having maintenance done on their dryer exhaust vents.
According to FEMA 2,900 dryer fires are reported each year and failure to clean is the leading cause of these fires at 34%. And according to the NFPA the vast majority of fires (92%) involved clothes dryers with 27% of the leading item first ignited being lint.
If They Didn't Go on the Roof They Probably Didn't Clean Your Dryer Vent!
Now the technician must go on the roof and remove lint stuck to the bottom of the backflow damper/baffle inside your gooseneck roof vent. (See drawing). Remember, if you had your dryer vent cleaned and the technician didn’t find the vent exit and clear the lint on the baffle your vent has not been cleaned. I say this because the extra weight the lint adds on the baffle is usually what slows down your airflow and causes lint to start building up throughout the rest of your dryer duct.
Lastly, this photo is of one of our customer’s dryer vent lint after we brushed out their dryer duct. With a pile like that you can definitely understand how this out of sight problem can start a fire.
