We got a call about this hard-wood floor that had scratches in a home listed for sale to see if we could remove them. We don’t sand and refinish hard-wood floors so we prepared the client to be disappointed, but promised to go look at it and see if there was any-thing we could do to help.
We tested for to see if there was an acrylic finish applied to the wood. (These include, but aren’t limited to Bona and Mop ‘n Glo).
As you can see here, there was a huge difference. We ended up giving a quote for removing the contamination to the factory surface of the wood and doing it through the entire home.
Now, this is a very common problem and an expensive one to fix. You see if you go into retail store and ask how to clean your hardwood or hardwood look flooring the go to answer will be, “Use this Bona polish. All of our customers love it.” With the amount of Bona covered floors we see, that is probably true.
However, that is only because these customers haven’t learned the nightmare this causes down the road when the inferior acrylics become scratched or embedded with soils (Acrylics are far less durable than the factory Urethanes) and have yet to hear that the flooring manufacturers void their warranties when these types of products are applied.
So, if you have a new hardwood floor or a friend with one don’t ever let these products touch it. Remember that if it leaves a shine it leaves something that doesn’t belong behind.
